Variety - The craze for fictional embellishment of artists' lives gets an Italian Renaissance airing in "Pontormo --- A Heretical Love." Focusing on the last few months of the mystically intense painter, helmer Giovanni Fago's tepid treatment poorly conveys the artist's genius while spoon-feeding a primer to the complex political and religious times he lived in. Despite being underwhelming in the title role, Joe Mantegna probably accounts for the initial B.O. burst on local release late May, but life on the bigscreen won't last long.
