Variety - The dead are among us in "They Came Back," an interesting if overly earnest look at what would happen if cemeteries just emptied out one fine morning. Relying less on George Romero's zombies and more on "Invaders From Mars" creepiness, helmer Robin Campillo's first feature can be seen as a metaphor for Europe's current refugee crisis, but also as a commentary on the various ways society copes with grief. Far too serious for its own good, general arthouse release seems unlikely, though fests may give it an airing.
